I am thrilled to be reviewing the Maxi-Cosi Mico Max 30, a super-safe infant seat that happily works well and looks good.
The car seat arrived in excellent condition with no damage to the packaging during shipping. After unpacking the seat, I explored the features prior to reading the manual. The carseat is intuitively designed, and I really needed to reference the manual only to ensure I had properly installed the seat in my vehicle.
There was no assembly required for the car seat or the base. The manual’s explanation and illustrations for vehicle installation were very clear. There are three convenient ways the base can be installed in your vehicle, making it very adaptable to whatever car or seat position you are placing it in. It took about 10 minutes to review the car seat manual and my vehicle manual and to actually install the base. The base also boasts anti-rebound protection bar for added safety. (While we’re on the topic of safety, the seat offers Air Protect Side Impact Protection as well.)
Once the base was in place, we tested out putting in and taking out the car seat. There is a reassuring click once the seat is securely locked in the base, so you know you’ve positioned it properly. The release latch to remove the seat is at the head of the car seat where there is the most free space, making it easy to find. The seat is also very lightweight, which is helpful when maneuvering the seat in and out of your vehicle (not to mention when carrying a getting-bigger-by-the-day baby!).
We purchased an additional base for dad’s car and have installed the car seat in the center rear seat of both a mid-sized sedan and a cross-over SUV. In both cases, the relatively small footprint of the base and car seat left the remaining two seats are accessible for passengers. The car seat can also be used without the base, which is handy if we’re traveling or taking an impromptu ride in Grandma’s car.
The Mico Max 30 lists a lower weight limit of 4 pounds. Our baby was 5 pounds on the day of discharge and was well-secured in this seat, thanks to the extra infant support inserts. There is a removable head support and a body support insert. The fabric is soft and self-wicking, helping baby remain comfortable throughout the ride. The cushion seems to be firm but cozy. There are removable covers for the shoulder straps and center buckle for baby’s comfort. The shoulder straps are easy to adjust with the push of one release button. There are four height adjustment levels to accommodate a growing baby.
The canopy is large and offers ample protection from the sun. However, it is rather fragile and difficult to clean. The canopy also tends to fall behind the head of the car seat when fully collapsed, making it more prone to get dirty or damaged. While the canopy can be tricky to clean, the seat itself is very easy to clean. The cover is removable and machine washable and dryer safe—you don’t even have to unthread the harnesses from the seat. Score!
Overall, I am very pleased with the Mico Max 30 and would definitely recommend it to a friend. The price point is reasonable, it has excellent safety ratings, is comfortable to carry, and comes in multiple different colors.
