You don’t have to be a designer or DIY maven to create a stunning nursery for your wee one. Case in point: pharmacist Lauren Folkmann, who transformed an empty space into this sunny, smart room for her son Magnus. “I knew I didn’t want one particular theme or color scheme, so I started with the big things, like the crib and dresser, and then added all the fun accents along the way,” she explains. Her fly-by-the-seat-of-her-pants method paid off in spades for the Folkmann family. “There were times when I doubted myself, especially when everyone asked about a theme and colors, but I went with my gut and hoped my (sometimes scattered) ideas would come together in the end.” And indeed, they did. Here’s what Magnus’ mama had to say about the process of creating this home sweet home.

Know Thyself
You’ll no doubt receive advice from family and friends when designing your nursery, but sometimes not taking that advice ends up being the best route for you and your wee one. “So many people say they never end up using their gliders, so I was a little nervous to spend a lot of money on one,” admits Folkmann.
“But we couldn’t live without it! I sit in it every day to nurse, pump, play, read and rock Magnus to sleep.”
“I really wanted to create a space that was fun and playful, modern but relaxed, and that could grow along with my baby.”
Playing favorites
“My favorite part of the nursery is without a doubt our ‘book nook.’ We had this odd indent in the wall that I wasn’t quite sure what to do with at first. Turns out it was the perfect little spot to put our books on display! For my baby shower, we asked everyone to bring a book in lieu of a card, so we were able to quickly grow our collection. I’m hoping Magnus loves all of them just as much as I do.”
Worth it
“The safari mobile was definitely a splurge, but it is so adorable and beautifully made. I found it on Etsy and just had to have it! The woman who makes them is from Lithuania, and I happen to be half Lithuanian. I thought this was a cool nod to my—and now Magnus’—roots.”
Travel bug
“My husband and I love to travel and hope to continue to do so with baby in tow, so I knew from the very beginning that we needed a touch of wanderlust somewhere in the nursery. I ended up finding a ton of great travel prints online. Whenever I look at them, I’m reminded of the amazing trips we’ve taken and the many more to come!”
