Sweet Aida joined her family in Detroit in December, but her mom, Kirstin Measom, who blogs at XOMrsMeasom.com, had her nursery picture-perfect with time to spare—that nesting instinct is no joke! Measom invites us to get inspired by both the pretty and practical elements of her darling’s quarters.

“Truth be told, when we had our first baby, [my husband and I] were both in college. That meant everything we had was either given to us or bought at the local thrift shop, so it wasn’t exactly to our taste. With Aida, I was really able to put together the nursery of my dreams. … Walking into her room, I get butterflies. It is such an incredible feeling.”

“I wanted Aida’s room to be a space where both she and my son could feel welcome. I thought that by introducing a lot of prints and textures, I would be able to create a place for them to be interactive and learn together.”

measom-8On choosing a nursery chair
“I recommend going with fluffy … Sleeker is never softer. During those 2 a.m. feedings, I won’t care one bit about what the chair looks like, just how quickly I can get comfy and fall asleep in it.”

“I use a swaddle blanket as my diaper pad cover. … The more uses for an
item you buy for a baby, the better. Versatility and functionality are key.”

measom-7On making it work
“The rug is big enough to hide the pinkish carpet underneath, subtle enough to go with all the prints, and textured enough to pull the different woods and whites together.”

On being realistic
“[Make] room in your budget for a rocking chair and a changing table. Although they might seem unnecessary, they are huge lifesavers. The rocking chair provides you with a comfortable place to feed and calm your babe, and the changing table saves you from getting pee and poo all over your sheets at 4 o’clock in the morning.”
