As a new parent, it is incredibly unnerving when you are discharged from the hospital or birthing center and sent home with the expectation that you will keep your baby healthy and safe. If you’re anything like I was as a new mom, you’re probably wondering, who gave these people the authority to make such assumptions?! This is a big responsibility—that you may or may not feel qualified for—so any product designed to give you a hand is worth investing in.

Thankfully, some baby gear manufacturers have made tremendous advances in safety features, and these ingenious solutions take basic safety precautions to the next level to help protect little ones. Whether you want to keep an eye on your babe’s temperature, ensure every bottle is perfectly warmed, help them stay warm in the car, or protect their little ears from loud noises, there is a product available to help.

Crib with Mesh Sides

I will never forget the piercing sound of my youngest’s cry when her little foot managed to get caught between the slats of her crib when she was a baby. It was awful, and I still get an ache in my chest when I think about it. According to the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) safe sleep policies, padded bumpers are a no-no, which is why we love this Breathable Mesh 3-in-1 convertible crib by BreathableBaby. Available in eight styles, this crib features mesh sides that adhere to the AAP’s safe sleep guidelines while protecting your little one’s limbs. It can be set up as a crib with a high mattress (for babies who aren’t pulling up yet), a crib with a low mattress (for bigger babies), and a toddler bed. Not to mention, it has a stylish, sleek design that you don’t often find with safety-focused furniture.

Car Seat Blanket

We all hate getting into a cold car, but it’s even worse for babies and kids in car seats because it’s unsafe to buckle them in if they’re wearing a coat. During the chilly months, you can keep your little one cozy in their seat with a Buckle Me Baby Car Seat Blankie, which is designed to safely cover your babe after they’ve been securely buckled into their seat. The blanket is basically a baby Snuggie; it’s made from plush fabric and fits like a backward jacket, with dedicated spots for your baby’s arms so that it won’t slip over their face. It’s available in five fun colors and three sizes from newborn all the way up to 5Y.

Power Outlet Cover

While not specifically a baby product, the Sleek Socket Ultra Thin Outlet Concealer is fantastic for baby-proofing the home. Cover exposed electrical outlets and hide dangerous (and unsightly) cords with the outlet cover with an attached extension cord. Plug your lamp, clock, or phone charger into the extension and tuck the cables securely behind some furniture. This simple contraption keeps babies safe from sticking their little fingers into sockets while your home stays functional and appears uncluttered.

Sleep Safety Monitor

Keep track of your baby’s temperature, heart rate, movement, and more while they peacefully snooze with the HALO Sleepsure Sleep Monitor.  It comes with a sensor that wraps around baby’s leg during naps and nighttime and connects to an app for parents to monitor their baby during sleep (available on iOS and Android). The sensor comes with two sets of three bands (small, medium, and large—six bands total), allowing parents to use the device from when their baby is a newborn up to 18 months old. Plus, the app allows multiple caregivers to use it simultaneously, so your partner can monitor your baby on their phone, or you can leave your tablet at home with the babysitter and still keep an eye on your babe while you’re out on a date.

Zippered Crib Sheet

To keep your baby safe while they sleep, there should be absolutely no loose bedding in their crib. There are plenty of perfectly fine fitted crib sheets on the market, but if you want to be extra safe, the QuickZip Crib Sheet won’t come loose no matter how much your baby tosses and turns throughout the night. The starter pack comes with three sheets (which is useful for spit-up and blow-outs—trust us) that you can zip on and off the mattress quickly and efficiently. When the sheet is zipped, it fully encloses the mattress and stays put, and the zipper is tucked away so your baby can’t grab it or pinch their tiny fingers. These sheets are made from soft 100% cotton and are available in several fun prints.

Car Seat Alarm

You think it will never happen to you, but sadly, babies are accidentally left in cars all too often—and the consequences can be fatal. The SensAlert from doona Lab aims to help prevent this tragedy from occurring by quickly alerting caregivers if a baby is left in their car seat unattended. It’s compatible with all car seats and boosters on the market and has three alarm levels to keep your baby safe. Simply place the pad on the bottom of your child’s car seat, connect it to your phone via Bluetooth, and set up the app (which can be used by up to three people at once) to have it alert you via push notifications and calls if your child has been left in their seat. App users can also add up to five emergency contacts that will get an alert with the vehicle’s GPS location in the event the child has been left unattended.

Smart Humidifier

A good humidifier is a must-have for cold and flu season … and RSV season … and Covid season … and basically any other time of year you want to ensure your baby’s good health. The Safety 1st Smart Humidifier keeps your little one’s room at the perfect humidity level all year round by connecting to an app that allows parents to monitor the nursery’s temperature—which is essential since the risk of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) increases with higher temperatures—and humidity remotely. The top-fill humidifier has a one-gallon tank large enough to run uninterrupted for up to 24 hours. You’ll also get alerts through the app when the tank is getting low and when it’s time to clean the humidifier to keep it in optimal condition.

Temperature-Regulating Swaddle

For your babe (and for you) to get quality sleep, it’s essential to make sure your baby isn’t too hot or too cold when they’re trying to snooze. The Ollie Swaddle by The Ollie World is made from moisture-wicking fabric that helps regulate your baby’s temperature and ensure they don’t overheat while they’re all bundled up. In addition to the safety aspect of this swaddle, its overall design is noteworthy. It has a custom closure that creates an individualized fit for your baby, the opening at the bottom makes diaper changes as painless as possible (no un-swaddling required!), and the soft, stretchy fabric allows it to grow with your baby whether they like to be swaddled with their arms tucked in or out.

Noise Reduction Ear Muffs

Whether you’re bringing your baby along with you to a crowded museum, on a long flight, or to their big sibling’s dance recital, loud noises can often be too much for their little ears. The Muffy Baby ear protectors from Alpine Hearing Protection are made to protect them from sounds that can potentially cause long-term damage to their hearing. The two ear covers reach noise reduction at 23 dB SNR and are attached to an adjustable soft headband that fits a baby’s delicate head without adding pressure. These cute (and effective) headphones are available in six colors, come with a carrying bag for travel, and are safe for kiddos up to 36 months old.

Smart Thermometer

There’s nothing that can break your heart quite like a sick baby. When your little one is under the weather, it’s important to monitor for fever (especially in babies under 12 weeks old), but unfortunately, babies aren’t always cooperative when it comes to the traditional ways of taking their temperature, which is why the VAVA Smart Baby Thermometer is so helpful. Simply attach the monitor to your baby’s underarm with an adhesive patch, and it will connect to a digital thermometer that will continuously display your child’s temperature in real-time—meaning you won’t have to disrupt their much-needed sleep to take their temp when they’re sick (or healthy). If it detects a high temperature, the display will beep (for temperatures greater than 100 degrees Fahrenheit) and flash red (for temperatures reaching 102 degrees Fahrenheit) to alert you, and it will continue to alert you for every 0.9-degree increase. This thermometer is very highly reviewed, but just a warning that it’s also in high demand, so you may have to put yourself on a waiting or backorder list to get your hands on it.

Safe Bottle Warmer

Many babies will only eat if their bottle is warmed to the perfect temperature. Unfortunately, bottle warmers aren’t always designed with safety in mind, and bottles can end up too hot or with hot spots that can pose a danger to little ones. You can avoid making this mistake with the Ember Baby Bottle System Plus. Though this innovative gadget is much more luxurious than your baby will appreciate, you’ll definitely love its stand-out features. It’s designed to ensure every bottle is warmed to body temperature—every single time. It keeps milk cold until you’re ready to warm it, then heats the bottle in under five minutes. Along with the smart bottle warmer, you also get two bottles with level 1 nipples, two level 2 nipples, two level 3 nipples, a thermal cover that will keep a bottle of milk cold for up to four hours, and two nipple adapters for Dr. Brown’s and Phillips Avent bottles (if you prefer to use these models over Ember’s). You can also connect to the Ember app, which allows you to warm a bottle remotely using your phone, log your baby’s feedings, and track their growth.
