A peek into the P&N office from an intern's perspective

After four years of undergrad and two years of grad school, I’ve had a lot of internships. This makes nine. That’s right, nine. I counted to make sure. They’ve all been rewarding and educational in their own way, but I’m so thankful to add Pregnancy & Newborn to my list (i.e., my resume).
And, in a snapshot, here’s why:
- These ladies are passionate. I’ve never heard anyone discuss baby gyms and compression socks in such detail and with such excitement. That kind of passion is contagious. I have vivid memories of telling my husband all about the latest stroller that can fold completely flat. (How cool is that?) And, no, we aren’t even expecting to be expecting any time soon.
- They also know their stuff. I’ve heard editors rattle off a list of baby tubs and their manufacturers in a minute flat—and completely from memory. Need an expert lactation specialist? A diaper cream recommendation? A cute Instagram photo? They’ve got you covered.
- This office likes to celebrate, and who doesn’t like that? Whether it’s saying goodbye to an intern or a birthday … or a Tuesday, they have a good time (and bring doughnuts if appropriate, which is basically always).
- Lastly, you might be an intern, but you’re still a part of the team. I can honestly say, nowhere else have I been asked, even encouraged, to give input on the cover. The editors are always open to ideas and suggestions, which just pushed me to give my best.
It’s been a thrilling three months. I’m a little sad to see it come to a close, but excited to be sticking around as copy editor because these are the kind of co-workers you brag about.
