Through babysitting experiences and lots of auntie-niece bonding time, I’ve had more than my fair share of experience with buckling car seats. Now, let’s talk safety, shall we? The “SIP” of Viaggo SIP 5-70 stands for Side Impact Protection. This system protects your child’s head, neck and spine in the event of impact of the lateral nature. It manages this by allowing you to adjust the seat to 10 different positions. The headrest, recline and shoulder straps all adjust to fit your child. The most convenient part of this perk: You can make all the adjustments you need while your child is sitting in the seat, eliminating the guessing game.
This seat is made with Expanded Poly Styrene (EPS) and a Shock Absorbing Foam Element (SAFE) that helps absorb energy upon impact. Basically, this foam crumbles when put under the pressure of impact so your child’s body doesn’t. Sounds good, right?
The Viaggo SIP 5-70 helps you follow the Academy of Pediatrics recommendation to keep your child rear-facing until their second birthday or until they reach the maximum height for their seat. Your child can remain rear-facing in this seat as long as his head is an inch below the top of the head rest or up to 45 pounds. For us, this meant we got to keep our babe rear-facing through his 18-month mark. And considering his 96th percentile for height and 98th for weight, I’m calling this a win. In many car seats, I would have been forced to face him forward much earlier based on his height and weight.
